0961093. Inn-Road to to Ancestry: Pioneer Inns of Ontario Volume 1: Head of the Lake & Niagara. edited by Dr. Robert J. Graham, D. Min., M. Div., LL.B, CD. 1996; xii; 128pp, soft cover.......................................................................................................... $15.00
The term "inn" is defined as "a public house for lodging and caring for travellers." Since the first days of the settlement of Ontario, inns have played a vital role in the social fabric of the communities that they served. They were landmarks for the early settles and the patrons of an inn were a mosaic of the lives and occupations within their community. Inn-Roads to Ancestry set out to gather information and to produce a publication of lasting historical significance. The stories that have come out of this project are an often unrecognized part of Canadian heritage. Volume 1 is the first of the series and depicts inns and innkeepers from one of the earliest settled areas of this province. In it, you will note how often inns moved in Hamilton, find out about an early Masonic Lodge in Barton Township, discover where to find historic lodgings in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and which of the wineries in the Niagara Region is nearly 150 years old. One does not have to be a genealogist of family historian to enjoy the stories behind the facades of the inns and hotels in this part of Southern Ontario.
0961089. Here be Dragons! Navigating the hazards found in Canadian family research: A Guide for Genealogists. By Althea Douglas, M.A., C.G.(C). 1996; vi; 74 pages, soft cover.. ..........................................................................................................................$14.95
The past is a foreign country! Genealogists - who travel in time - will find this guide book helpful. Like the apocryphal "Here be Dragons" warnings placed on old maps, the book will advise researchers where trouble may lurk as they delve into the records looking for their Canadian Roots. Here be Dragons! relates to all parts of Canada. Consider the westerner whose grandfather left Nova Scotia, the American whose family 'came from Lower Canada' or a researcher trying to locate the lost cousin who 'went to Rupert's Land'. Places with obsolete or, even worse, the same names, present real problems. Settlers often lacked imagination when naming their communities. Inventive spellings often caused family names to change, particularly in regions where two or more languages were spoken. Researchers will find alive on changing social custom, common knowledge that is now forgotten, migration patterns, and the splits and mergers that form today's religious denominations. Each chapter is supplied with a list of useful published sources for further reading on the subject.

In the rush for census and vital statistics records, many amateur genealogists ignore equally important, but less well known sources of family information: the estate records found in the Surrogate Courts of Ontario.. Whatever the ultimate utility of these records proves to be for the individual, it is important that this source not be ignored, either through a lack of understanding what the Surrogate Court records have to offer or through an unfamiliarity with the mechanics of finding the records. For genealogists approaching Surrogate Court records for the first time both of the above difficulties can prevent their successful use. This guide is designed to guide you through successfully using these valuable records.

095622. THE PEOPLE OF GLENGARRY, Highlanders in Transition,1745-1820. By Marianne Mclean 285 Pp. Paper. ...................................................................................$18.95
McLean explores the relationship between economic changes in the Highland and the clansmen's emigration to Canada and settlement in Glengarry County, Ontario. The author challenges the currently accepted position that the clearances and sheep farms did not have a central role in provoking mass emigration. While McLean does not argue that Landlords forces people to leave, she uses local evidence to show that the economic changes brought about by these factors led many Highlanders to emigrate.
095618. LOYALISTS IN ONTARIO, The Sons and Daughters of the American Loyalists of upper Canada. By William D. Reid. 418 pp., indexed. (1973), repr. Balto., 1994. .......................................................................................................................................$35.00
In the years following the close of the American Revolutionary War, there was a special provision that made the children of the Loyalists who settled in Ontario eligible for land grants free of fees as they came of age or married. The compiler of this work extracted from the Canadian Orders-in-Council thousands of references to the land grants made to these sons and daughters and arranged them systematically under the names of their Loyalist parents. The references in the Orders-in-Council generally provide, in the case of sons, the name of the petitioner, his place of residence, and the name of his father - the Loyalist through whom he claimed the land grant. In the case of daughters, the reference states the name of her husband, their place of residence, and the name of her father. Mr. Reid has also supplied, from additional sources, marriage dates, birth and death dates, and the names of wives of the sons of the Loyalists.
095617. THE ONTARIO PEOPLE: 1796-1803. By E. Keith Fitzgerald. With an Introduction and Index by Norman K. Crowder. 261 pp., maps, indexed. Balto., 1993. .....................$25.00
A compliment to the work above, Ontario People is based on the District Loyalist Rolls of 1796. Transcribed for the first time and annotated by Dr. E. Keith Fitzgerald, these rolls were derived from the title deeds obtained by Loyalist settlers of Upper Canada (today Ontario) and have been embellished by comments of Canadian magistrates. The 4,000 entries are a rich source of information on the early inhabitants of Ontario, showing, in many instances, relationships, deaths, military service, maiden names of married women, and remarriage of widows.

Includes maps, detailed notes on sources, and an every name index of 6,000 entries.
095615. UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS. Enquiry into the Losses and Services in Consequence of Their Loyalty. Evidence in Canadian Claims. Second Report of the Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario. By Alexander Fraser. 2 vols. 1,436 pp., indexed. (1905), repr. Balto., 1994........................................................................... $87.50
This monumental work of 1,436 pages contains records of the claims for losses of over twelve hundred persons who found it necessary to flee to Canada during and immediately after the Revolutionary War. While it does not contain documents supporting claims for compensation, it does consist of the extensive notes taken by the Commissioners who heard the claimants from 1783 to 1790. These notes contain a goldmine of biographical, historical, and genealogical data, and "sum up the position more pungently" than the actual documents which support the claims for compensation. In general, we are given the claimant's name, his country or place of origin, reason for emigrating, date of migration, place of residence in America, occupation, names of family members and friends, location and value of confiscated property, war service rendered, losses sustained, evidence of character, statements of witnesses, notes of deeds and wills, and highlights of the claimant's experiences during the war.
