1862 Nevada Directory. Extracted by Doreen Robinson. 2000. Quintin Publications, Pawtucket, R.I., 8 1/2" 11", spiral bound. 57 pages.  $8.50

One of the proudest moments for a fledgling mining cap was the publication of its inhabitants, business and mines. The future of these camps often depended on attracting outside capital for its future development. These directories were essentially like a telephone book without the telephone.  They identified businesses, the type of business and its location; the individuals who lived in the community and gave detailed descriptions on the mines in the area. Unlike a telephone directory, the individuals listed in this book also identified their specific occupation and often where they worked.  This directory contains listing of individuals living in the towns and outlying areas of Aurora, Carson City, Dayton, Empire, Genoa, Gold Hill, Silver City, Virginia City and Washoe.  A listing of county and federal officials and their position is also included.
