Memo
To: Anyone who
Purchased "Searching Through
the Old Records of New France"
From: Armand H.
Demers, Jr.
Subject: Thanks for
Purchasing the Book ... Here are a few things which you should be aware of.
Date: March 16,
1999
As my translation goes into its 3rd printing, I'd like
to thank you all for having received it as well as you did and to let you know that the
next printing will be slightly revised to reflect the following:
- On p.33, the September 1645 entry will be corrected to reflect the
fact that the "Journal des Jésuites" was the running story of
daily life at Québec as kept by the Jésuit superiors from 1645 to 1668, NOT 1688.
- On p.126, the March 16th 1716 entry will be amended to
reflect the fact that Françoise Hébert was the widow of Guillaume Fournier, a fact which I had
inadvertently omitted in my translation.
- On p.128 (lines 8 & 9) and on p. 131 (lines 6 & 7), the
reference information which I had furnished you with should be: "............please
refer to my comments after the entry of November 24, 1659
", NOT March 14, 1717.
- On p.167, the footnote should be numbered 111,
NOT 112 and should refer to the entry for the 24th
of March 1746, NOT the 3rd of October
1746.
- On. p.185, the reference information on lines 13 & 14 should
refer to the entry dated October 29th, 1753
NOT March 14th, 1717.
- On p.211, the September 13th, 1762 entry...on line 3 is
a spelling error...found instead of fund.
- On. p.235, the November 6th, 1768 entry...my definition
of a syndic, although appropriate in other settings should here reflect the syndic's
relationship to the church and should now read: [A syndic could have been an
officer representing a government or community or an elected official for some community
groups. Collectively, syndics were a body of officers or a council. In a church
setting - as above - a syndic served as a trustee.]
- On p.244, the heading on the table at the top of the page should
read from 1771 TO 1780, [certainly] NOT 1781 TO 1780.
- Finally, on page xviii of the Index at the end of the book, please
add page 126 to pages 54, 124 and 217 - the three pages formerly listed for FOURNIER.
I invite
any comments that you might have on the translation as well as any ideas that you might
have for future translations which might be of interest or assistance to you personally or
to us all.
Thanks again,
Armand H.
Demers, Jr.
