A most interesting an informative journey through the history of the parish registers and the various laws concerning them. Many actual examples of entries are given including many that we would find defamatory today!!! A very interesting read. |

The Contents of this volume represent a part of the large collection of Manuscripts bequeathed to the University of Edinburgh by the late David Laing, LL.D., who died in October 1878. Though most of his personal library was sold by Sotheby's in 1879 these manuscript charters were donated to the University under the condition that they be catalogued and accessible to any that wished to do so. This volume is the fruit of their labor. |

"Great scholarly work; its aim is "to narrate history of the English counties upon a foundation of original research." Of tremendous value to genealogists because of the large amount of local history, Doomsday transcripts, etc. Two counties (Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire) have volumes entirely devoted to genealogy, but in general, every volume contain material vital to the researcher. Most are in two parts; general and topography. Roughly 30 percent of English counties covered so far. Expensive set, but essential to any library which seeks to assist British research." William Filby. American & British Genealogy and Heraldry. A Selected list of books. Third Edition. Boston, 1983. New England Historic and Genealogical Society. |

| CD58 | A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland, comprising the Several Counties, Islands, Burgh and Market Towns, Parishes and Principal Villages. With Historical and Statistical Descriptions; Embellished with Engravings of the Seals and Arms of the Different Burghs and Universities. Samuel Lewis, 4 volumes (1846) 1233 pages. ISBN: 1-58211-227-4 | $19.95 | |
| Every fact of importance that illustrates the local history of Scotland is in this book. Arranged alphabetically by place (village, parish, town, etc.), it has an accurate description of all Scottish localities as they were at the time of publication (1851), showing where a village was located in relation to its parish, or the nearest town or towns, where a parish was located in relation to its nearest district, and the names of villages in it, the number of inhabitants of an area, the main landowners, and chief topographical features. This work enables you to identify a given locality in relation to a parish and thus the identification of the parish records. So, if you know the place of origin of your ancestor--the village or town--this gazetteer will show you, in effect, which parish records to search for births, marriages, and deaths. Modern gazetteers are useless for this purpose. The civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths began in 1855, at which time all the old parish registers were called in. The LDS Church has copied the parish registers of every parish in Scotland, from the earliest up to 1855, and has indexed virtually all of them--all the more reason to know your ancestor's parish. | |||

Samuel Lewis, Fifth Edition, 4 volumes (1842) 2464 pages. ISBN: 1-58211-228-2 | $19.95
|
This present offering is a reprint of the original 1831 edition, one of only two editions of the Lewis Dictionary that will lead the genealogist back to the English parishes and chapelries that are of importance in seeking probate records. In alphabetical order, every county, city, borough, market town, post town, parish, chapelry, township, hamlet, tything, and hundred in England is accurately recorded and described. With respect to counties, information furnished includes the following: situation, extent, and population of the county; statistics and history of all civil and ecclesiastical jurisdictions; and accounts of the courts of assize and quarter sessions. With respect to cities, boroughs and market towns, information given includes: situation and bearing from nearest county town; population and local institutions; and markets, municipal government, courts, and religious establishments. Concerning parishes, data provided covers the townships and chapelries which the parishes comprise, their archdeaconries and dioceses, and, if of exempt ecclesiastical jurisdiction, the peculiar court to which the parish belongs. In townships, chapelries, hamlets, and tythings forming civil divisions of parishes, the same arrangement of data is given, but with respect to villages and hamlets which are not recognized divisions, they are described under their respective parishes. Key to the work (for the genealogist) is the fact that even the most obscure place in England is identified in relation to a parish and in most cases to a specific church. But over and above its obvious genealogical value, the Dictionary is a fascinating and illuminating work in itself, and it brings to life the ancestral homes and villages which until now have existed in name only, or as part of family lore and tradition. |
